On 9 December 2022, the “Knowing Vaccines” Innovative Training Network (ITN) held its second workshop “Vaccination between Individual Autonomy and Social Responsibility”.

Special guest medical anthropologist Dr Sung Joon Park presented his team’s work at the Bernard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, and reflected on ways to conceptualise modes of interdisciplinary collaboration. Other sessions included interactions with Park’s work, and small group discussions on current vaccine practices.

All in all, the workshop made evident how different dimensions of culture and society are complexly interwoven into sometimes very pressing ethical negotiations around vaccines during epidemics, requiring context-sensitive inquiries and close empirical investigations on the ground.
